Mice or Rats? What to Look For

Mice and rats move indoors around Pittsburgh as the weather cools. Most homeowners hear or find signs of them long before they see one.

    House Mice

Small and gray, with droppings the size of a grain of rice along walls, in cabinets and behind appliances.

Mouse on wooden surface, illustrating common fall pest issues related to rodent infestations and the need for pest control services.

    Norway Rats

Much larger, with droppings closer to the size of a raisin. Often nest in basements, garages and burrows along the foundation.

Mouse nestled among dried leaves and stones, representing common rodent pests in homes, relevant to natural deterrents like peppermint oil and cayenne pepper for effective rodent control.

    Activity Outside

Burrows, runways and gnawed openings around the foundation, garage doors, sheds and woodpiles show where they come and go.

Other signs: scratching in walls or ceilings at night, chewed food packaging, nesting material made of shredded paper or insulation, and a musty smell in closed spaces. How to tell mice from rats by the sounds they make.

    How It Works

From the First Visit to a 90 Day Warranty

Locally owned and family operated since 1987. Call before noon, Monday through Friday, for same day service.

    1. Inspection. We look for droppings, gnaw marks, runways and nests, inside and out, to find where rodents are active and how they are getting in.
    2. Bait stations and traps. Stations and traps go inside and outside the house, placed where the activity is.
    3. Follow up visits. We come back every two to three weeks for the first three months to check stations, rebait and adjust.
    4. 90 day warranty. Rodent service is backed by a 90 day warranty.

How We Get Rid of Mice and Rats

Two tools, used together, and checked on a schedule until the activity stops.

    Bait Stations

Bait stations go along the foundation and in the places rodents travel. They are checked and rebaited on every follow up visit.

    • Placed where the activity is, inside and outside
    • Bait stations, not loose poison
    • Checked every two to three weeks for three months
    • Backed by a 90 day warranty
    Fast results indoors

    Traps Inside the Home

Traps go where mice and rats are active inside: basements, kitchens, attics and garages. Why loose poison is a bad idea.

    • Targets the rodents already inside
    • Placed with kids and pets in mind
    • Moved and reset on follow up visits
    • Works alongside the bait stations

Why Mice Move Into Pittsburgh Homes

    • Cold weather in October and November pushes mice indoors looking for warmth
    • Older stone and block foundations with gaps a mouse can fit through
    • Attached rowhouses and duplexes where mice travel between homes
    • Garages, sheds and woodpiles right up against the house
    • Pet food, birdseed and pantry food that is easy to reach
    • Clutter in basements and attics that gives them places to nest

    Rodent Questions

To get rid of rodents, it’s important to determine the exact species you’re dealing with. For example, if you have rats and select mice traps, the trapping mechanism isn’t large enough for the rats. Conversely, if you have mice and choose rat traps, the traps most likely won’t trigger for a mouse. Plus, each species behaves differently. Our highly-trained technicians know exactly where to look and what to look for. Understanding the differences between species increases our rodent program’s success, which is what separates us from the competition.

A lot of homeowners try do-it-yourself or over-the-counter solutions. The problem with this approach is it sometimes causes rodents to spread around your house, plus it’s often not enough to deal with large populations. Here at Stewart Termite & Pest Control, our technicians are trained to diagnose the problem, think outside of the box, and come up with solutions that make sense for you. If you’re dealing with a rat or mice problem, or want to protect yourself from future infestations, please call us at 412-822-7610!

Absolutely! Our rodent control service is performed by thoroughly trained technicians who place baits and set traps according to the law.
