Carpenter ants are large black ants, much bigger than the small ants that trail to crumbs. Other signs are piles of coarse sawdust below trim, windows or beams, and winged ants indoors in spring. If you see big black ants inside during the winter, the nest is likely inside the house.
Carpenter ants do not eat wood the way termites do. They hollow it out to make room for the nest, usually where the wood is damp, and the damage grows as the nest expands.
