Bed bugs are small. They are about the size of an apple seed, flat and reddish brown in color. At night, these pests like to feed on blood, most often from people and sometimes our pets. They are hitchhikers that crawl onto clothing, backpacks, suitcases, and other accessories carried by people. These are the most common ways bed bugs will find their way into our homes. Once bed bugs are inside, they can begin to feed and reproduce very quickly, making a bed bug invasion inevitable. Stewart Termite & Pest Control will share how you can get rid of bed bugs.
Signs of Bed Bugs
To first know that you have a bed bug problem you will want to look out for these few basic signs of their intrusion. One sign, of course, is visually seeing bed bugs on your mattress or furniture. Second are chronic bug bites that appear either in small tight groups or even straight lines on your body. Another common sign is defecation by the bed bugs. They will leave small reddish brown spots on bedding and sheets as well as shed skin that looks like pepper particles around your bed. Once a bed bug problem has been established, you will want to get rid of them as soon as possible.
How to Get Rid of Bed Bugs
Getting rid of bed bugs works well when the homeowner and the pest control company works together. It is important to fully prevent and remove bed bugs by doing your part while the pest control company does ours. A good pest control company will do an inspection and follow up with a treatment of the entire house. Remember though, it is also up to the home owner to play their part. Homeowners need to clear out the clutter which can house and hide bed bugs. Additionally, you will need to do some of the treatment yourself. You will need to wash all bedding, curtains, and linen in the entire house that can be washed, and using the highest temperature possible. Furniture such as couches, sofas, and even mattresses need to be thoroughly vacuumed. This means removing cushions and vacuuming the sides, top and underneath the furniture. Remember bed bugs like to hide in dark areas and they are very small and flat. They can and will squeeze into tightest areas and creases of furniture. Vacuuming will suck up all the bed bugs and hopefully even their eggs and nymphs. It is also recommended to thoroughly vacuum and steam clean your carpets and rugs. Again, bed bugs prefer fiber or fabric to climb on and hide in. They will also cling onto rough surfaces. However, bed bugs can’t climb or crawl up smooth surfaces like metal or glass.
