Cockroaches are all over the world, ranging in size and color. Where they usually invoke the heebie-jeebies and can make grown men squeal, they can actually do far more. Cockroaches, no matter what the species, can trigger allergies, induce asthma attacks, and spread bacteria, germs and diseases by contaminating food and surfaces they traverse upon. Cockroaches can also contribute to damage on property and structures foraging for food and nesting materials. In a nutshell, cockroaches are not only grotesque, they are a health concern and cause can cause household damage. Today, we at Stewart Termite & Pest Control would like to take a closer look at the more common species of cockroaches found in Philadelphia.
Most Common Cockroaches
Throughout Pittsburgh, PA there are three more common species of cockroaches scurrying through the darkness, as most cockroaches are nocturnal. They are the Oriental cockroach, the German cockroach, and the American cockroach. Cockroaches in general have been around since prehistoric times and there are thousands of species throughout the world.
1. German Cockroach. Most commonly found raiding kitchens; German cockroaches are often introduced to homes in boxes or other such transportation. They can range from ½”- 5/8” by adulthood and are light brown or tan in color.
2. Oriental Cockroaches. Oriental Cockroaches are sometimes referred to as “water bugs” because of their preference to moist conditions, often living in the sewer system. They are typically black to a reddish color and are notably shiny. Oriental cockroaches reach up to an inch long by the time they are full grown adults. If they make their way inside people’s homes they are usually found in basements and crawl spaces.
3. American Cockroach. By far the biggest cockroach in the United States, cockroaches measure between 1 and 3/8” – 2 1 and 1/8” long at full grown adulthood. They are usually reddish brown in coloring and can fly but are very awkward in doing so. Being one of the fastest running insects around, they prefer to run when given the opportunity. They favor warm and humid conditions to live in are often found near hot pipes and other high temperature areas. If they do make their way into homes and businesses, they will often hide under appliances.
What Harm Can Cockroaches Do to Humans?
Cockroaches are notorious for their nonchalant ways as to what they eat and what they way crawl through. Because they are one of the filthier living insects around, they easily pick up and carry diseases, germs and bacteria. Simply walking along on surfaces where you prepare your food can spread what they carry. As mentioned above they can trigger allergies and worsen asthma as well. If you spot one or two cockroaches in your home or business that could actually be a tale-tell sign there is an infestation brewing in your home or business and professional care is optimal.
