Rats are notorious for being unsanitary animals. They can be found in many different places, which makes them one of the most well-known and difficult pests worldwide. They literally can live anywhere in the world in a variety of ecosystems. They are excellent scavengers and survivalists. Unfortunately, they partially rely on humans to survive, and therefore, tend to congregate where we do. They can be very invasive and cause damage to your home. Stewart Termite & Pest Control is here to help you identify and prevent rat infestations in Greater Pittsburgh, PA.
What Kind of Rats are Found in PA?
There are two species of rats most commonly found in Tennessee, the Norway rat and the roof rat.
Norway Rat
This is the larger of the two species. It measures between 13-18 ½ inches in total length. It is usually brown in color with a tail that is shorter than its body. The tail is mostly naked, but darker on the top than the bottom. The Norway rat can live in many different climates, including cold climates. Because of this, the Norway rat is found all over the world.
Roof Rat
The roof rat is usually slightly smaller. It still measures between 13-18 ½ inches in total length, but its body and head are shorter than its tail. This rat is usually black in color with a lighter grey underbelly. The tail is also free from hair, but unlike the Norway rat, it’s one consistent color. The Roof Rat prefers warmer climates, and will rarely be spotted in areas that have cold weather. The Northern US has almost no roof rats because of its cooler temperatures. They also are better climbers and seek refuge in higher places like your attic.
What Keeps Rats Away from Your Home?
Following are some tips to prevent a rat infestation.
• Repair any cracks or holes in foundations, along with any broken windows and other rat entry points.
• Keep landscaping neat and trimmed. This will help eliminate places for them to hide and make a home. Also eliminate shelter for rats by keeping compost and piles of wood at least one foot above the ground.
• Store pet food in rodent-proof bins. It is also wise to not feed the local wildlife, such as squirrels and birds. The food often given to these animals makes excellent rat food.
• Make sure your trash receptacles are rodent-proof. If the lids are starting to not fit properly, replace them with tight fitting lids to help keep the rats out.
